The hay barn birdhouse is designed and best suited for bluebirds, however, we have had swallows, house finches, wrens and nuthatch renters. It is designed to be mounted on top of a post. Bluebirds are good neighbors with most birds and people, but not other bluebirds or starlings, they are fiercely territorial, I've seen the bluebird take on a starling, in flight and twice their size, and bring it to the ground and give a thorough thrashing.

If you want more bluebirds around, you will need to place the next birdhouse 300 to 500' apart. However, we have many bluebird bird houses 20' apart, the bluebirds select theirs and the swallows, house sparrows, wrens and nuthatches use the rest. The wrens and nuthatches usually use the ones with the smaller entrance holes, but not always. Go figure!

This hay barn birdhouse is designed in an old hay barn style, including side loafing sheds,  simulated wood boards, corral fence, loft door (bird entrance), hitching rails and barn doors.

The hay barn birdhouse comes plumbed with three drains and three natural air conditioners (vents), one directly across from the bird entrance hole and one on each side under the roof 1/2" wide by 5" long.  It is insulated with 7/8" cedar to also reduce heat inside or warmer on those cold days.

Like all our barn birdhouses this bird house has a raised nesting floor to prevent the potential of water seeping in under the bird house into the nesting area.

Cleaning the hay barn birdhouse is simple, just remove three screws on the bottom you can take the bird house off for a complete spring cleaning.

The special features of the hay barn birdhouse is it has two covered corrals, the loafing sheds, that provides shelter in either side for fatherbird when motherbird is on the nest during one of those rainy days.
