The Importance of Mounting, Cleaning and Feeding.

First and foremost is the construction of bird houses and bird feeders, this can't be over stated, which leads us to the following.

You need to consider the following when mounting a bird house and bird feeder, weather and predators. Weather needs to be considered for the opening, and predators need to be considered for any potential access to the bird house or bird feeder, and heat, or cold are another potential problem. Direct sun light in the afternoon is the primary consideration. Cold is less a problem except for winter bird feeding.

Cleaning varies for bird houses and bird feeder. Bird houses, we only clean in the fall or early spring. The bird feeders once or twice a month seems to work. Cleaning helps to reduce or prevent potential bird diseases.

Picking the right bird feed can be a challenge. Our choice is black oiled sunflower seeds, Niger thistle, and millet seeds. We have found most, but not all, mixed bird feed is seldom cleaned up, leaving waste to be thrown away. Finally, some bird seeds have been enriched with vitamins and antibiotics. Our jury is still out on this one.
