Mounting Predator Guards

Our basic predator guard for both birdhouses and birds feeders mounted on posts or poles is a sheet of tin, flashing just below the bird house or feeder.

This easy and effective predator guard is a 18" to 24" wide sheet of thin tin wrapped around the post. That's it.

Bird house or bird feeder predator guard are not recommended for bird houses mounted on a tree trunk. Not a good idea, try not to place your bird house on a tree, unless you can hang it from a branch.

Mounting Bird House or Bird Feeder on a Telescoping Pole

This method of mounting either one is the answer to not needing a predator guard. There are a lot of telescoping poles for mounting bird houses or feeders on the internet, however, prices and shipping can be a problem.

Making your own bird house telescoping pole is not that difficult. You can use galvanized or PVC pipe, which is less expensive. You'll need two lengths of pipe, one for the base, which has part of it is in the ground, and the upper part is attached with a union coupler. The upper pipe will need a flange with, preferably, holes for attaching the bird house or bird feeder. However, the problem is the difficulty in getting it down when you need to clean it, or in the case of a bird feeder, to fill it.

You can modify this whole system to make it into a telescoping pole by using to different sizes of pipe, the upper pipe slides into the large bottom pipe. You will need to drill holes in the bottom pipe to place pins to hold the pipe at the height you want, and to keep the pipes lubricated or loose enough to slide up and down easily.
