We take pride in our bird house construction and bird feeder construction.

We have provided this list of our bird house construction and specifications
to assist the home builder to make the best bird house for their wild birds.

  1. All bird houses are constructed to The Audubon Societies and U.S. Fish and Wildlife suggested specifications for a particular or group of similar type birds.

  2. We use 7/8" Cedar in our bird house and bird feeder construction which gives a better insulation factor for the inside of the bird house and cedar increases its weather durability.  Weplace the rough side out for its rustic unique aesthetic value.

  3. We place 1 to 4 vent holes in our construction of each bird house to relieve the heat and increase natural air circulation inside the nesting box.  Number one killer of a nestling.

  4. We put 3, 1/4" drain holes in our construction of each bird house nesting box floor to help keep the nest area dry.

  5. When we use a bottom platform (deck) we place an additional raised floor inside each bird house nesting area.

  6. All bird houses and bird feeders are designed for easy cleaning, just remove three screws under the bird houses and four to six screws for a bird feeder, and the bottom or top comes off.

  7. We use water base nontoxic paints and stains, however, natural is best. The water base material will age rather fast, adding to the rustic old look.

  8. We use coated nails and screws in our construction for weather protection.   However, most bird house and bird feeder  decorations are attached with very small non-coated brads.

  9. In addition to fasteners, all roof, walls and decorations are glued with exterior wood glue to help prevent possible leaks and gives longevity to the bird house or bird feeder and its decorations.

  10. The bird house or bird feeder are mounted either on a surface (building or pole) or on top of a fence post, the larger bird feeder needs a platform to sit on.

  11. Each bird house and bird feeder has complete instructions for mounting, cleaning and basic information about the wild birds most likely to use them on our website.

  12. Individually handcrafted bird houses and bird feeders constructed in cedar takes time, therefore, all orders will take time to complete.  Some of these bird houses and bird feeders have 100 of parts, not to mention 100's of cuts and grooves, drilling holes, sanding and paint or staining. We simply ask for your help by placing your orders as early as possible if there is a deadline, such as a gift, let us know, we'll give you an estimated shipping date.

  13. A Personal Note -  We refuse to compromise the birds safety and comfort, and feel that a real bird house or bird feeder should be built to the recommended specifications of the "Audubon Society" and "U.S. Fish and Wildlife", yet, without losing its aesthetic value and  uniqueness as an attractive addition to your backyard or home.  Most "Bird Lovers" will only settle for the best and that’s the folks we build a bird house or bird feeder for.

  14. We hope you enjoy your "Fine Feathered Friends". Email address is birdhouses at familybusinesses.com if you have any questions or suggestions.
