Bird Watching Equipment & Accessories

When shopping for bird watching equipment, keep in mind that all you really need is an inexpensive pair of binoculars and a field guide, and your on your way. This webpage will give you an overview on the bird watching equipment and accessories that are available on the market. The webpages listed to the right and below can give additional, more detailed information about the respective equipment and some include ratings; enjoy.

Among our birdwatching activities we enjoy daily in the great outdoors, our favorites are walking along the river, and backyard birding (daily bird watching in our own backyard.) Backyard bird watching can be fun, but it may require a little preparation to maximize your potential for drawing in more birds. This link to our backyard bird-watching webpage will give you some ideas to try out in that area.

The first piece of bird-watching equipment is the binocular. Until you're sure bird watching is for you, and something you will be willing to invest time, effort and money in, buy an inexpensive pair of binoculars. There are many levels of quality and (respectively) cost in the binoculars available. Consider you will be able to choose from decent binoculars for under $100.00, good binoculars in the $100 to $500 range, and very high quality, professional-grade binoculars in the $500 to $1,000 range. An excellent pair of binoculars can cost several thousands of dollars, but even for the serious birdwatching avocationist, it is not necessary to spend that kind of money (nor, quite often, is it feasible). There are some options that may be considered a worthwhile investment because of their dual or multi functionality; such as a tricked-out pair of binoculars that has a digital camera as part of the binoculars, or a high-power spotting scope or telescope with a digital 35mm camera attachment. More on this on the Bird Watching Binoculars webpage.

On the Birdwatching Camera & Camcorder page we talk about the best types of cameras and camcorders for bird watching. This is an area most bird watchers can really get carried away in. Again, it is not necessary to have a lot of fancy equipment to enjoy bird watching; however, being able to capture pictures or videos of your sightings can be a wonderful way of documenting and tracking your bird-watching experience, and sharing your experiences with others. On the Birdwatching Software & Video webpage, you will find there a number of bird watching reference videos to consider as well as a limited number of software programs. Bird watching software and videos can really help you not only identify wild birds by appearance, but can also allow you to reference and cross-reference the sounds they make (their songs and calls). Check this out on the Birdwatching Software and Video webpage.

On the Bird Watching Magazines and Books webpage, you will find there is virtually no limit to the amount of bird watching information and reference material available. First and foremost on your list, remember, is a good field guide with decent pictures or, even better, illustrations. The bird watching magazines and journals are a good source for current information about everything you might be thinking about adding to your bird watching equipment. They can also offer great bird watching tips and up to date tour and trip information. Link to Bird Watching Books and Magazines webpage.

One of the benefits of joining a bird watching club or subscribing to a birdwatching newsletter is learning the best locations in your area and globally for bird watching, especially when you re wanting to search out that particular wild bird you're missing in your journal. The real fun part of bird watching clubs however, is getting to socialize with other bird-watchers. Telling stories, the one that got away, competing to see who had the most, the rarest, or the most interesting sightings, and simply being in the company of like-minded hobbyists is the kind of social interaction that is best accomplished, or at the very least enhanced by joining a birdwatching club.

Bird watching locations can be on or near your backyard to hot spots or rare bird sightings anywhere in the world. Clubs, newsletters, forums or bird watching travel agencies are a good source of information. Link to bird watching hot shot locations.

An exciting way to enhance your bird watching experience is to vacation or go on organized tours with other bird watchers, especially to exotic places like Costa Rica. We are a little too reclusive to have had this experience ourselves; therefore, this declaration is more theoretical and speculative than coming from actual experience. Finding good bird watching forums and blogs, have been included on this website, which can plug you in to the scene, so to speak, without the feeling or requirement of commitment on your part that may be associated with clubs and subscriptions. These forums and blogs can be a great source of information for you and can give you personal insights about locations throughout the United States and other popular parts of the world, as well as give first hand user ratings and reviews of bird watching equipment. As an added plus, you are allowed to post your own questions and notes on many of these sites. Here's a link to Bird Watching Forums and Blogs.
