This has always been my Achilles heel, luckily my daughter is a small business and tax accountant for the last 20+ years. If you are like me, a hands on owner and want to be where the action is, not at a desk all day long, then consider an accounting software program. However, make sure it works for your accountant, too. All you'll need is someone that can make all your data entries. Data entry is a straight forward task, you will need to develop a chart of accounts and customize your data entry forms.

Renee uses Peachtree accounting by Sage for, payroll, account receivables, account payable, inventory, job costing, paying bills, financial statements, create and manage budgets, improve cash flow, and tax software, just to mention a few of Peachtree Accounting features.

Renee can set her clients up to use the same program, simply for data entry (bookkeeping). At the end of the month or as needed, she simply has her client upload the data and creates all the desired reports, including paying you bills, payroll, and various taxes. If you want. Again, all you or an employee have to do is enter the data.

The pros and cons of doing it yourself.

There are basic accounting or bookkeeping software programs that many small business use, however, from personal experience, data entry and general bookkeeping can be a pain in the neck if you are an active owner. The learning curve of an accounting program can be very time consuming, meaning actually doing your own complete accounting, reports, payroll and paying bills, not just the data entry.

Another area to consider as an owner of a small business, is information is critical in growing a business and staying in budget. When to expand and when not to, without accurate detailed information be prepared for setbacks and moments of paralysis.
