How to Start a Small BusinessFirst, Pick a hot market.Picking the right market is going to be very important with todays market in an upheaval, however, todays market is a hot market to start a small business. You just need to be careful to pick the right market, a market of reasonable needs more than a market of unnecessary wants, to have a successful start in a small business. Contrary to popular belief, many markets are producing a profit, especially in the small business arena. There isn't any crystal ball to tell you which ones, and if there were, everyone would be headed in the same direction. Do your homework and you should do fine, but it's going to take a lot of research and time, it's better than being unemployed. Second, use many resources to start your small business. You will need to research many resources to narrow down the area that is showing a strong potential of profitability and still fit your personality and experience level. There are small business grants available, however, try to start your small business with low overhead which may mean starting from your home and using the internet as your focal point of marketing your products or services, especially for your local area. Finally, don't fear the economic chaos today, use it.I'd like to put into context what really happened in the last great depression. Seventy-five people were employed out of one hundred. My grandparents were in their thirties during this time and they said those who didn't let fear control them and knew how to survive by changing their living and financial habits, did just fine. They pointed out that people still needed the basics to live; food, shelter, clothes, medical, transportation and some form of recreation. In their case, listening to the radio, reading, games, (canasta and bowling was their favorite) and on a more productive side, gardening, fishing and hunting. Think about this, just let your imagination go and consider what may apply in todays market for starting a small business. Those that lived in small communities or rural areas did better than the city dwellers. The big businesses cause most of the problems for employment when they had to lay off or went into bankruptcy. But when a company goes bankrupt, they leave a hole in the business world, it will need to be filled, or at least parts of its products or services, and those that realized this, survived without debilitating stress and hardship. Bottom line as I see it, in the next few years the small business will be our main source for products, services and employment. So create you own employment. I never did like large companies or their unions. I was to independent and saw the handwriting on the wall when they had major layoffs or went under. The worst case scenario was the employee that was close to retirement that lost everything. You may find it interesting how many variations there are of small businesses that do well during a depression. All you need is a little commonsense, intelligence, some practical experience and a lot of research and small business planning. |
