What qualifies as a family business?

If a business is owned and managed solely by family members, it's more than likely a family business. It doesn't matter how many different families are invested and involved, nor does it lose its family business status if most of the employees are not family members.

Most family businesses are closely held. A couple of exceptions are that friends or outsiders may invest and hold non-voting preferred stock or voting common stock. Bottom line is, the family retains at least 51% of the common stock, but at some point it can become questionable about being a family business.

Relationship between family, small, home business.

By in large, the majority of family businesses are also considered a small business, however, not limited to becoming a major corporation with thousands of employees.

When a family business works from the home, it also can become known as a home business. So a family business can be known as a small business and a home business, too.

Our family business experience.

My experience has been with small business from 1 to 30 employees, since the early sixties. My experience related to the internet has been since 1995. My daughter, a small business tax accountant in the Seattle area since 1986, and I officially started familybusinesses.com in 1997.
